Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund
The $30 million Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund (PSEF) was established during a particular period of crisis in Pacific salmon fisheries. The charge given to the Board of Directors of the PSEFS by the Government of Canada was to make a positive difference for Pacific salmon by helping to rebuild the salmon resource through increased habitat restoration, resource stewardship, habitat protection and strategic stock enhancement measures.
Under the leadership of Rick Hansen, the PSEFS chose to achieve these targets through investing in the capacity and development of Pacific Salmon Foundation. Managing the yearly revenues from the Endowment Fund investments, the Foundation has been able to create and assist in the implementation of six watershed scale strategic salmon recovery programs (SSRP) throughout BC. The goals and success of these recovery plans has lead directly to the creation and on-going implementation of the innovative Fraser Salmon & Watersheds Program. In addition, the strategic and funding relationship between the Foundation and PSEFS has lead to increased capacity within the Foundation in terms of leadership, partnering abilities, communications, and program management. In addition, PSEFS has directly supported much needed innovation in scientific research, leading to the establishment of the Tom Buell Chair in Salmon Conservation and Management at Simon Fraser University.
PSF is a strong voice for Pacific salmon in B.C. and in Canada as a result of the funding and guidance provided by Pacific Salmon Endowment Fund Society. Pacific salmon and stewards throughout the province have been witness to improved habitats, cleaner water and a brighter future as a result of the relationship between the Foundation and PSEFS. We look forward to many successes together in the future.
