Salmon Partnerships at its Best

PSF in the News

Pacific Salmon Foundation vice president Mike Meneer (second from right) presents a Salmon Conservation Stamp print to volunteers and supporters of the Aloutte River Management Society as part of the volunteer group's community open house on April 30. Meneer is pictured with (left to right) Dan Cody, B.C. advisor, federal minister of fisheries; Mike Murray, executive assistant, MP Randy Kamp; Geoff Clayton, volunteer and president, Alouette River Management Society; Ernie Daykin, mayor, District of Maple Ridge; Meneer; and Greta Borick-Cunningham, executive director, Alouette River Management Society.

By Michael Meneer, vice-president, Pacific Salmon Foundation

Visiting the Alouette River Management Society's education centre and fish hatchery that they run in partnership with the provincial correctional centre in Maple Ridge was tremendously inspiring. This is partnership at its best with corrections officers who are the hatchery managers, supervising a team of prisoners who are trained to operate the hatchery, coupled with community volunteers who run an active community education centre that serves schools in the District of Maple Ridge. Pacific salmon Foundation has been a funding partners since 1998 with contributions totaling $443,651. These grants were made possible in part because of funds raised through sales of the saltwater Salmon Conservation Stamp.

I was really glad Michael Murray was there from MP Randy Kamp's office, because Randy led the way in Ottawa to get 100% of the Salmon Conservation Stamp money returned to B.C. - since 1996, we have only gotten about $1.20 per $6.00 stamp; now we get every cent of the Salmon Conservation Stamp revenue to invest in great salmon conservation programs like the Alouette River Management Society. Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykin's presence was great too, because local support is a major factor for us when we decide to make grants to a particular streamkeeping project. Thanks to local fundraising efforts, every dollar we have invested through the years has been leveraged with another $7! I was delighted to spend the day with our friends on the Alouette and look forward to great things for Pacific salmon conservation together in the future.
