Future of the Fraser Salmon
To understand the changes to watershed shed and impacts to wild Salmon and Stó:l? First Nations , and contributing factors We met with community members over the period of 8 months the purpose of these meeting was to develop a community understanding of changes and impacts to both Salmon and Stó:l? First Nations, TEK research with Stó:l? resource centre to gather Ethnohistory of Stó:l? First Nations linkage to the Salmon.
The Framework That was used to engage Stó:l? First Nations communities helped us understand, past, present, future, salmon patterns and to develop short- term and long term goals with communities workshops helped take a deeper look at what type of relationship building needs to take place for future planning, how we cope with current conditions. Some partnership was undertaken with other community groups, a technical presentation of Chum Salmon population within the Fraser Valley to help with referrals process for technical staff. A total of two workshops with communities and one with local government. results:
• Community volunteer group to work on watershed clean-up
• Continued commitment to meet on monthly basis funding needed Volunteer group
• Information sharing Stó:l? Tribal Council to undertake until group can secure further funding
• Community members feeling empowered to make changes
• Vision/Mission statement developed
• Mapping started
• Community awareness of Food insecurity and the impacts this has had.
• Elders committed to the process of change
• Draft community story Framework to help community members with decision making ( Appendix A)
• Stream vulnerability information for Bands/lands department to help deal with the Thousands of referral that come through Fraser Valley. These have categorized by stream sensitivity ( please refer to technical analysis for detail Appendix B )
