Pacific salmon are foundational to our ecosystems, but they are facing unprecedented challenges and are threatened by climate change, development, disease and habitat loss.

Bears, like Mr. Brown, consume up to 30 salmon a day. They typically carry their salmon catch into the forest to eat, in turn spreading the nutrients deeper into the forest.

More than 130 plant and animal species – including orcas, bears, eagles and trees – depend on Pacific salmon for their survival. We all need salmon, not just bears.

Overall, salmon stocks in British Columbia are at an all-time low. In fact, right now, nearly half of Pacific salmon populations are in crisis.

Climate change is a major driving factor — it’s impacting ocean temperature and food availability in their marine environment. And it’s changing freshwater ecosystems — with increased water temperatures, droughts, fires and floods impacting salmon habitat.

The good news is, salmon are resilient and we can help.
