The colouring booklet comes in four editions. The main edition weaves together words from the languages of the project’s three partner Nations — Hul’q’umi’num’, ʔayʔaǰuθəm, and Kwak̓wala — while three special editions feature language pieces entirely in one language, each with an introduction from that Nation’s perspective. In every edition, every time you learn a word, you help keep the language alive.
Featuring language pieces in Hul’q’umi’num’. Cowichan Tribes are working to keep the language strong by teaching classes and bringing it into schools.
With language pieces in ʔayʔaǰuθəm, shared by speaking and listening, passed down from Elders to youth for thousands of years.
With language pieces in Kwak̓wala, spoken by many of the Kwakwaka’wakw Nations. Communities are working hard to bring the language back.
Pacific herring are small — but they do a big job! They help feed salmon, birds, sea lions, and even whales. When herring are healthy, the whole ocean is stronger.
People depend on herring too. First Nations have harvested herring and their eggs for thousands of years, and today First Nations are working together with biologists and community members to care for herring, salmon, and their ecosystem. This colouring booklet introduces the animals, knowledge, and hands-on work on the water that guide the Salmon-Herring Interactions project.
The booklet features artwork by Jessica Chickite, a Lekwiltok artist from the Cape Mudge Band (We Wai Kai). Following in her father’s footsteps since the age of 9, Jessica uses paper, wood, canvas, and deer-hide drums as media for her art and shares her work in schools and communities to keep the culture going for future generations. Valesca de Groot, Habitat and Ecosystem Science Coordinator, added in her love for science communications by connecting the research with accessible activities throughout the booklet.
The Pacific Salmon Foundation Salmon-Herring Interactions project team is grateful to have worked alongside the Cowichan Tribes, Tla’amin First Nation, and the A-Tlegay Fisheries Society to explore and learn about these lands and waters. This colouring booklet, and the research that informed it, was funded by the British Columbia Salmon Restoration and Innovation Fund.
