diving
PSF has been supporting diving workshops with Guardians from coastal B.C. Nations to hone their kelp survey techniques, species ID skills, and underwater monitoring methods that support ecosystem health in their territories. This growing network of Indigenous divers is strengthening stewardship from the seafloor up.

What happens when geese cause the loss of 90 per cent of estuary marshes on Vancouver Island? We keep them out, of course. PSF has been supporting community-led efforts to protect juvenile salmon habitat on Vancouver Island from overabundant (and invasive) Canada geese by installing ecocultural fencing. Woven from alder and willow, these fences keep geese out – and baby salmon in – by protecting delicate marsh habitats from overgrazing.
jetty
For 100 years, the Fraser River’s North Arm jetty – a 7-km barrier – cut off juvenile salmon from essential habitat. PSF worked with Raincoast Conservation Foundation and other partners to make a 30-metre breech in the barrier which juvenile salmon immediately used to access marsh habitats, giving them a fighting chance to grow and adapt to saltwater before they head to the ocean.
