Proceedings of the National Meeting on Applying the Precautionary Approach in Fisheries Management

Abstract

A joint Fisheries Management and Science workshop was convened in Ottawa on February 10-12, 2004 to further progress on implementing the Precautionary Approach. Fisheries managers met to construct a conceptual management framework and decision rules associated with reference points in the framework. Scientists met to refine the definition and calculation of the framework reference points.

The meeting resulted in a three zone framework, with two reference points being adopted as the preferred approach. The methods for calculating reference points were critically reviewed, and a robust subset selected for further development.
