The Pacific Salmon Foundation partners with more than 35,000 streamkeeper volunteers and 300 volunteer streamkeeping groups across B.C. to conserve, restore and enhance salmon and their habitat. These dedicated stewards are the ‘eyes and ears’ of local salmon conservation. They also drive engagement and education within the community.
Streamkeepers
Streamkeepers are citizen scientists that are trained through the federally sanctioned Streamkeepers Program.
Development of the Streamkeepers Program began in October 1993 as an initiative of Fisheries and Oceans Canada. With funds provided by the Fraser River Action Plan, FOC created the Streamkeepers Handbook and Modules.
The objectives of the program are as follows:
- Provide volunteers with the training and support required to protect and restore local aquatic habitat;
- Educate the public about the importance of watershed resources;
- Encourage communication and cooperation in watershed management.
