Wild Salmon Day is a day to recognize the tremendous cultural and environmental role wild salmon play for people around the world. Join us on June 1st to celebrate the work we do together to restore and recover wild salmon everywhere.

About Wild Salmon Day

Wild Salmon Day first launched in Canada in 2019, led by the Government of British Columbia, as a way to honor wild salmon and spotlight the growing challenges they face.

Now in 2025, the movement is expanding. The Atlantic Salmon Trust and Atlantic Salmon Federation are coming together with the Pacific Salmon Foundation and the First Nations Fisheries Council of BC to amplify global efforts in support of wild salmon recovery. We are inviting salmon stewards around the world to come together for International Wild Salmon Day.

2025 Theme: “Cold, Clean Water”

Wild salmon in the Pacific and Atlantic are facing growing pressure from human activity throughout their life cycle: on land, in rivers, along coastlines, and in the ocean.
Around the world, wild salmon are declining. In the Pacific, most wild salmon are far below historic levels. In the Atlantic, wild salmon have declined by 70%.
Wild salmon rely on cold, clean water and healthy habitats to survive. On June 1st, thousands of people are raising the flag to call for urgent salmon recovery efforts.

Iconic landmarks like BC Place, Science World, and the Bastion in Nanaimo are also lighting up in recognition of this important day.

Massive social media engagement with hundreds of posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter from people for salmon;
Special messages from government officials including Minister Nathan Cullen, PS Fin Donnelly, PS Kelly Green, Minister Joyce Murray;
Exciting videos from local salmon advocates like Bob Kronbauer and Rick Hansen;
New initiatives including The Real Estate Foundation of BC’s launch of the Indigenous graphic novel “We Are of Water”;
Countless local events like the White Rock Elementary School fundraiser and puppet show.

Hard to imagine no longer having wild salmon in our waterways and oceans. A remarkable life cycle to see and one that has reliably supported people for thousands of years. Our family cannot absorb their probable disappearance. The indigenous peoples not only have relied on them for their sustenance but also the salmon are a part of their identity culturally and spiritually.
