Immerse your corporate group or family in a unique experience at Cheakamus Centre teaching hatchery in Brackendale, BC. Your group of 12 will capture, collect, and fertilize salmon eggs after catching brood stock in a specially designed fish-trap. Cheakamus Centre staff will lead a hands-on egg-take session, followed by a locally-sourced lunch after your morning immersed in nature. Carved Cedar Salmon Panel

This 33″ round hand carved yellow and red cedar panel is by John Henderson of the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, BC. This impressive piece depicts a salmon jumping out of water and features beautiful abalone inlays. In northwest coast symbolism, salmon represent the life source and the provider of food for all animals and humans. Kwakwaka’wakw carver John Henderson has been deeply immersed in the rich artistic and cultural legacy of his culture from an early age.

“Raven and Light” 14k Gold Pendant with Diamond by Landon Gunn

This 14-karat yellow gold pendant necklace by Landon Gunn, a Kwakwaka’wakw/Métis artist, features a diamond in the eye of the intricately carved raven. In Indigenous cultures, Raven is known for its knowledge and cunning. Raven appears in many legends as curious, intelligent, innovative and creative. Landon Gunn has ben carving since 2002 and has worked with a number of artists including Haida artist Clarence Mills, with whom he assisted in carving totem poles and learned to carve jewellery from.

Powell River-based raku artist and sculptor, Ed Oldfield, has collaborated with Ian Lowe of Lowe Tide Design to create this very special multi-media raku pottery and stainless-steel sculpture. Ian Lowe is a Coast Salish metal sculptor with a passionate connection to the natural environment. This piece features a raku Chinook salmon with intricate color, patterns, and textures, complemented by 11 stainless steel herring nestled in seaweed and kelp. Weighing 13.8 lbs and measuring 44.5” x 14.25” x 4.0”, this sculpture is truly one-of-a-kind!

“Connected” Fine Wood Art Sculpture

Pacific salmon are connected to the world around them in infinite ways. This wood-art piece celebrates some of those connections. The Western Red Cedar encased within this carving was once destined to become a fence until carpenter ants created a vast nest inside a pile of wooden fence rails. David Maki saved the damaged wood and preserved the carpenter ants’ nest in a clear resin, before carving, sanding and polishing into a carving to represent the clear streams to which the Pacific salmon originate and return. If you look closely, you can see a clear view of the carpenter ants’ creation within.

This is an opportunity for individuals with and without disabilities to spend a day on the water with Rick Hansen and a Certified Guide in a custom accessible vessel! This brand-new boat and its marinas serve as an inspirational case study for accessibility – and includes innovative solutions to barriers such as ramps, wider doors and windows, scissor lifts, speech to text technology, high contrast focal points, specialized headsets, adaptive fishing rods, and an accessible washroom. This accessible boating experience will increase awareness and knowledge of the barriers in the natural environment, inspire change, and directly enable people with disabilities to access these spaces. When people with disabilities are able to access the natural environment, it leads to a more inclusive and healthier world for everyone, everywhere!
Your group of four will depart from either Mission or Steveston on an 8-hour itinerary (lunch and provisions included). PSF’s Jason Hwang will also join Rick and your group! Between Rick and Jason, you might learn a thing or two about Pacific salmon and the mighty white sturgeon, too! Date to be mutually arranged within one year.

At’la’kwis – Hunter of the Woods Carved Mask

At’la’kwis – Hunter of the Woods is a hand carved, hand painted and signed mask by William Henderson Jr. from the Kwakwaka’wakw First Nation. William was born in 1979 and belongs to the Wei Wai Kum First Nation in Campbell River, BC. This is a very special mask to the Henderson family, and it is only carved by William, his father and master carver Bill Henderson, and his cousin Junior Henderson. The hunter face depicted is carved from red cedar while spear and the raven on top of the mask are yellow cedar. William comes from a culturally devoted family of renowned carvers, and is dedicated to teaching song and dance to younger generations, as well as participating in potlatch ceremonies to maintain cultural traditions.
