Pacific salmon a symbol of unity for economy, culture and climate

PSF congratulates the newly elected members of Canada’s 45th parliament. Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Liberal government will need to lead the country through unprecedented threats to our economic security. Making Canada strong includes restoring wild salmon, a natural resource with singular significance in Canada’s identity, culture, and economy. The majority of Canadians agree.

On the West Coast of Canada, 70 per cent of Pacific salmon are below their historical abundance. But there is reason to hope with success stories of wild salmon recovery when governments invest in plans led by people across watersheds and communities.

Recent polling shows that 70 per cent of British Columbians and more than half of Canadians support more government investment into Pacific salmon recovery. PSF and our partners look forward to working with the next Parliament to make sure wild salmon are valued as a national priority.

Wild Pacific salmon have benefited from investments through the B.C. Salmon Restoration and Investment Fund and are set to benefit from recent policy changes like the ban on open net-pen aquaculture. We look forward to working with the new government to grow the impact of these initiatives for salmon.
