Salmon Hatchery Egg-take for 12 People

Immerse your corporate group or family in a unique experience at the Cheakamus Centre teaching hatchery in Brackendale, B.C. Your group of 12 will capture, collect, and fertilize salmon eggs after catching brood stock in a specially designed fish-trap. Cheakamus Centre staff will lead a hands-on egg-take session, followed by a locally-sourced lunch after your morning immersed in nature. Date to be mutually arranged before May 2026 with consideration for river levels and brood stock availability in November or December. Alternatively, your group may experience a hatchery tour and fly release if a date is set outside of the winter spawning period.
Carved First Nations “Eagle and salmon” Bracelet

Haida artist James Sawyer crafted this bracelet featuring an eagle and salmon, two powerful symbols in Northwest Coast art. The eagle represents power, knowledge, prestige, friendship, and peace, while the salmon symbolizes a life source and provider for all creatures. James Sawyer works with bentwood boxes, drums, paddles, prints, jewellery, and more. Influenced by Doug Wilson, Ike Hans, and Reg Davidson, he began carving in 1996. His innovative pieces often blend Haida traditions with popular culture.

Carved Gold Grizzly Pendant by Kelly Robinson

This 14 karat gold pendant necklace by Kelly Robinson, a Nuxalk/Nuu-chah-nulth artist, depicts a Grizzly. In Nuxalk culture, the grizzly represents an ancestral link, wisdom, resilience, and the potential for a strong and positive future. The bear is seen as a guide and protector, emphasizing the importance of community and working together to overcome challenges. Kelly Robinson is formally educated, and his work is held in collections around the globe. Kelly apprenticed under Alvin Mack to learn traditional Nuxalk design, and has been mentored by Haida artist Jim McGuire, Nuu-chah-nulth artist Gordon Dick, and many other notable carvers.

“vanishing” Wood Art Sculpture

This piece, entitled “Vanishing”, was handcrafted from salvaged yellow cedar and resin, and it is a life-size representation of a Steelhead or Steelhead Trout. Steelhead are in decline, and the condition of many stocks is listed as poor, meaning they are in a state of serious conservation concern. They are, in fact, vanishing. Created by artist and woodworker, David Maki, “Vanishing” was created to bring the dangerous decline of Steelhead to the attention of as many people as possible.

“Namyut” Carved Cedar Panel

Namyut – Family within our communities is very important, with so much revolving around family and togetherness. Namyut is reflected in this panel with two salmon in a circle shape, symbolizing the strength and resilience that families carry. Nestled in between the salmon are eggs to represent how the pair protect future generations so that offspring can thrive and carry on the life cycle. For the Kwakwaka’wakw people, salmon hold deep cultural significance as Provider and symbolize fertility and good health. Salmon is a source of life and is known for dependability and renewal as a food source in the past, present and hopefully the future. Will Henderson, born in 1979, belongs to the Wei Wai Kum First Nation and descends from the Nak’wax’dakw Nation. He shares his powerful expression of family, tradition, and responsibility through his work.
