About Wild Salmon Day

Wild Salmon Day began in 2019 with leadership from the Government of British Columbia to celebrate wild salmon and raise awareness of the threats they face.

In 2025, the Atlantic Salmon Trust and Atlantic Salmon Federation joined the Pacific Salmon Foundation and First Nations Fisheries Council of BC to build international momentum for salmon recovery.

We invite organizations worldwide to join us and unite in support of wild salmon. Thank you to our partners and supporters for standing with us in this vital effort.

It will take all of us to write a brighter story for salmon.

2026 Theme: “Restore Salmon Rivers. It starts with healthy habitats”.

Wild salmon depend on healthy rivers, wetlands, estuaries, and oceans throughout their life cycle. But across the world, many of these habitats have been damaged by human activity and climate change.

This year, International Wild Salmon Day highlights the people and communities working to restore salmon rivers by reconnecting habitat, repairing ecosystems, and bringing salmon waters back to life.

On June 1, people around the world will raise the flag for wild salmon and celebrate the growing movement to restore healthy habitats for future generations.

Thanks to the incredible support of local governments, industry and community partners, Wild Salmon Day has grown into an international celebration. Explore the proclamations announced for Wild Salmon Day through time.  Iconic landmarks like BC Place, Science World, and the Bastion in Nanaimo are also lighting up in recognition of this important day.

Thank you to everyone who participated in Wild Salmon Day!

In recent years, we saw:

  • Massive social media engagement with hundreds of posts on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter from people for salmon;
  • Special messages from government officials including Minister Nathan Cullen, PS Fin Donnelly, PS Kelly Green, Minister Joyce Murray;
  • Exciting videos from local salmon advocates like Bob Kronbauer and Rick Hansen;
  • New initiatives including  The Real Estate Foundation of BC’s launch of the Indigenous graphic novel “We Are of Water”;
  • Countless local events like the White Rock Elementary School fundraiser and puppet show.

BC wild salmon is something I discovered 8 or 9 years ago.. and fell in love with at Mossom Creek. I realized I can make a lot of friends helping salmon…

Hard to imagine no longer having wild salmon in our waterways and oceans. A remarkable life cycle to see and one that has reliably supported people for thousands of years. Our family cannot absorb their probable disappearance. The indigenous peoples not only have relied on them for their sustenance but also the salmon are a part of their identity culturally and spiritually.
