Salmon Life Cycles

“Salmon Life Cycles” featuring PSF Biologist, Samantha James.

We created this video as a part of the Salish Sea Marine Survival Project in order to provide students with the necessary information to become experts on the salmon life cycle. This video also provides information on what makes good salmon habitat as well as an overview of the threats facing Pacific salmon. PSF suggests this video for students in the Grade 5 – 9 range.

Habitat Restoration and salmon

Watch how restoration can make an impact for Pacific salmon! By PSF’s VP for Salmon, Jason Hwang.

Curious about the salmon life cycle and how habitat restoration can positively impact Pacific salmon? Jason Hwang, VP of Salmon at PSF created this educational video for his wife’s classroom. It demonstrates the life cycle of salmon and highlights PSF-funded restoration work in the Adams River. This family-friendly video that shows the positive impacts restoration work can make in your community!

Salmon Toolkit

Created by the Outdoor Learning School in collaboration with NatureKids BC, the Super Salmon Learning Kit helps to teach kids about salmon and their importance to ecosystems. The kit features books, guides, flashcards, and fun activity ideas.

Salmon Education Website

The Powell River Salmon Society has put together K-12 Education Resources about Pacific salmon that includes Primary and Intermediate online course materials and a Live Stream Camera that lets people from around the world watch fertilized salmon eggs hatch into alevin.

Watershed CPR Program

The Watershed CPR Education Program is a self-guided, virtual learning experience all about the Fraser Watershed, created by the Rivershed Society of BC. Through this virtual experience, users are guided through the three pillars of Watershed CPR—Connect, Protect, and Restore

Climate Adaptation Series: Freshet

Historically, during normal years, early run sockeye and Chinook salmon migrate easily through freshet to their natal spawning streams. However, many rivers have had higher-than-average flows for three of the past five years.

Climate Adaptation Series: Wildfires

In this feature, we learn from PSF VP Salmon Jason Hwang about how wildfire events can devastate the landscape and freshwater habitats by creating unstable slopes, which cannot absorb water and drive additional run-off and debris downstream.

Climate Change: State of Pacific salmon

Pacific salmon face a variety of pressures, and climate change is now one of the biggest threats to survival for many populations.  The good news is that Pacific salmon have been adapting for millennia. And we can help them continue to do so.
